2. Your Business Journey

What motivated you to start your MLM business?

I started in MLM when my children were very young (3 under the age of 3 years old – childcare and London commuting costs were prohibitive), so I was fortunate to be at home with them but needed something that offered personal growth, the opportunity to keep my mind active, a good challenge and provide financial stability.  Even if it was at first only to buy my husband a present not with his money!

15 years later I had built, developed and supported a team of over 600 and was able to contribute in a meaningful way to the household, as well as pay for holidays, kids clubs and my own self-care treats.

Loving the flexibility, working with like-minded women mainly, and partnered with a company that was honest, open and caring made it even more special.

Why did you choose this specific company

More recently I have partnered with Clean Living for all the above reasons and additionally knowing that I am and can help customers create clean, healthier homes, improving theirs and their family’s health whilst also protecting our planet.

What was your initial investment, and how did you find the startup process?

How has your business grown since you started?

My initial investment was just £54 on a Complete Cleaning Kit, that purchased individually would have cost over £115.  I had borrowed a demo kit so knew the product worked and that I wanted to change my cleaning habits to an effective and more environmentally friendly, sustainable product range.

How has your business grown since you started?

Since starting 2 and a half years ago I have built a strong repeat order customer base, built my knowledge base about this industry, shared this information with 100’s of potential customers and have a number of like-minded women in my team, using zero toxin cleaning solutions and spreading the word.

3. Lifestyle & Flexibility

How does your MLM business fit into your daily life?

The beauty of this type of business model is that you can design the sort of business that best works for you and around your existing commitments.  For some it is a part time side hustle to pay for treats or top up a pension, for others it becomes a full time income opportunity.  Past experience has taught me that (like any business), the more time I can invest in it the faster and bigger it will grow.

What other commitments do you balance alongside your business?

My business fits neatly around visiting my adult children who are spread across the globe (currently I am writing this from Belize, Central America, while spending time with my daughter who is days away from having her first baby!), being around for and walking my dog several times a day, spending quality time with my husband, reading, gardening, personal development and my self-care classes which often take place in the middle of the day, so I just carry on working a little later.  When my children were younger it meant being able to attend all the nativity plays, sports days, awards events, musical concerts, as well as helping with the sports teams – generally ‘taxiing them wherever they needed to be.  When blessed with more grandchildren I plan to spend time with them, all whilst building this amazing business.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

Ah now that’s a hard one!  One of the other benefits of this type of business is that everyday is varied and can be as flexible as you need it to be.  I do have schedules for planning, networking, admin, calls and customer facing activity, but if you were needing more flexible working, around shift patterns, family commitments, unplanned events that is completely doable too.

4. Benefits & Challenges

What are the biggest benefits of running your MLM business?

There are many benefits, like other self-employed ventures, including:

  • Unlimited earning potential, generally the more income generating activity you can invest in your own business the bigger and more rewarding it will grow.

  • Low risk, low investment required

  • Working with like-minded people, supporting each other

  • Opportunity to use and improve skills already acquired and learn many more

  • Creating a healthy work, life balance

  • Doing something you feel passionate about

  • Already mentioned the flexibility – choosing when and where to work

  • Getting away from office politics – although my fluffy, four legged doorbell often chats back and gives me trouble!

  • Autonomy, independence, following my own intuition

  • The feeling of achievement when realising successes and growth

  • Creating your own work environment

  • Setting your own goals and plans to achieve them

  • Growing our own destiny, not someone else’s

  • Finding many supportive networks and organisations

  • Massive personal development

  • It can be whatever you want or need it to be –happy hobby a side hustle for the extras in life, a part time occupation for more regular income (for pension top up, holidays, car payments etc,) or a substantial full time mortgage paying income – you decide.

  • Lots of support and marketing collateral provided by the company

Have you gained any unexpected skills or experiences through this business?

I have gained so many unexpected skills and experiences, just a few of these are:

  • The importance of customer service and the customer experience

  • Better communication skills

  • Leadership skills

  • Management reporting skills

  • Collaboration

  • Effective networking

  • The importance of visibility

  • Branding

  • Mind management

  • Need for self-care including boundaries

  • Raised self-confidence and self esteem

  • Public speaking

  • Recognising skills developed that had been previously overlooked

  • Realisation we all think and experience events differently

  • Plus, many more

What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?

Interesting there have been challenges but I have found nowhere near as many as there are benefits.  The biggest challenge for most people is:

  • It is hard work, and the return is not instant

  • The biggest for me was/is procrastination – having a plan and efficient scheduling limits this.

  • The flexibility does require a lot of focus and self-discipline to actually work out and do the activity required to attain your goals

  • Investment funding – being in MLM this is limited

  • Risk management – good records and monitoring

  • Speed of change in technology – asking for help

  • Social media presence – again having a good plan and schedule

  • Being consistent and persistent

What advice would you give to other mature women considering starting an MLM business?

  • You will never know if it is for you, if you don’t try it

  • Find a reputable product and company that have similar ethics and values, and you feel proud to work with

  • Use the products yourself – you will always be your own best customer

  • Speak to your closest family and friends about it, they will want to support you

  • Develop a love of learning

  • Make it fun

5. Business Support & Community

How has the company supported you in building your business?

Clean Living have:

  • Supply of fabulous products

  • Huge amounts of marketing materials available

  • Regular and planned payments

  • Weekly training across all disciplines

  • Leadership training

  • Good management systems in place

  • Free replicated e-commerce website

  • A great community

Have you benefited from training, mentorship, or networking opportunities?

Throughout my time with Clean Living International I have attended and been a part of:

  • Both company initiated training and external training

  • Networking that not only supports my business but also my personal growth

  • Many friendships have formed both inside the Clean-Living network but also with customers, other network consultants and through business networking

  • Company generated leadership mentoring and external sources of mentoring

Do you feel a sense of community within your MLM business? How?

Absolutely, here are a few of the practices the company provides and promotes so that everyone within the organisation can participate and feel a part of something larger and supportive through our ambassador dashboards, closed social media groups, and face to face meet ups:

  • Sharing good practice and information

  • Sharing success stories and experiences

  • Helping each other with challenges

  • Supporting and recognising the attainment of business goals

  • Setting challenges for each other

  • Being ‘accountability buddies’ when required

6. Future Goals & Reflections

Where do you see your business in the next few years?

The company vision and my goals are very much aligned to achieve the following:

  • Help and support many more people make the transition to environmentally friendly, effective cleaning solutions

  • Grow and develop a large team of independent, ambitious, environmentally conscious individuals

  • Creating resources for people to tap into around being environmentally friendly and sustainable.

  • Make Clean Consciously with Kate a recognisable brand locally

  • Become a ‘go to’ knowledge bank for living more healthily

Would you do anything differently if you started again?

No matter how much experience you may have hindsight is a wonderful tool!

  • I am not good at asking for help, so would find a process of comfortably doing this

  • Keep better records right from the very start

  • Create better flexible processes and systems

  • Stop expending energy worrying about what other people think, haha!

Any final thoughts or insights you’d like to share?

In summary;

  • Starting an MLM business is a very cost effective, relatively low risk form of going self employed

  • You have to be disciplined with your time, energy and focus

  • Be prepared to put in the hours and activities to reach potential customers

  • Be patient for results whilst being persistent and consistent.  It doesn’t always happen immediately

  • Above all have fun, do it your way
